Chapter Twenty-Three

Natasha moved quickly inside the apartment, grabbing loose clothes and stuffing them into an empty duffel bag. Emily followed her every move, asking multiple times if she could help, but every time Natasha responded, “No, I’m fine.”

When Natasha came to the bathroom, she looked every which way, frantically trying to figure out what to pack. It wasn’t until Emily grabbed her by the shoulders and spun her around that she shook the anxiety away.

“What’s wrong with you? Why are you so flustered?” Emily said.

Natasha’s eyes found the floor. “It’s V.”

Emily empathized with her situation. She and V were close, too, and it’s never easy losing a friend, especially a friend you trust. And in truth, so few in the spy world can be trusted.

Tears formed in Natasha’s eyes as she looked back up. “I never thought it would come to this.”

“Tell me about Lopez.” Emily figured changing the subject would help to calm her nerves.

“Gilberto?”

“Yeah, what’s he like? Did V trust him?”

“Well, yeah, I guess.” Natasha shrugged.

“You guess? What’s that mean?”

“I mean, from what I gathered, they’ve worked together on the Rajabi mission for a while. Sure, he has some quirks and has said some stupid things during their time together, but nothing that V considered dangerous. Why do you ask?”

“I don’t know, it’s not really what I’m asking, but more so, what Burke was asking. I could tell he was confused by Lopez’s—” Emily stopped to use finger quotes. “Death.”

“What do you mean?”

“I don’t know. We can ask Burke more about it when we talk to him next, but my question to you is, do you think V trusted Lopez with her life?”

“I mean, yeah, I think so, but . . .”

“But what?” Emily pressed. “What is it?”

Natasha broke free from Emily’s hold and walked into the bedroom to gather her thoughts. Emily followed close behind but stayed quiet while Natasha ruminated on her memory of V’s exact words.

Natasha whipped around and said, “Okay. V didn’t spell it out specifically to me, but she kept on repeating that she needed to be at the building with Lopez to obtain the flash drive.”

“Okay. So . . . ,” Emily started, “I’m guessing she didn’t plan on getting captured.”

“So . . . at the time she told me, I didn’t really read too much into it. Honestly, it was right before she and Lopez went off to Damascus to get more intel on Rajabi and the flash drive. Then all hell broke loose. They always did their missions together. It was part of their legend—their cover. Sure, they were allegedly journalists, but they were also supposed to be a married couple. When she mentioned that she needed to enter the building, well, I thought maybe it was because they’d always be with each other. I don’t know.” Natasha threw her hands up. Like she was talking herself into a circle.

Emily sat on the nearby bed, put her hands to her face, and took in the story. “Do you think Lopez could be hiding something?”

Natasha shrugged and said, “I honestly don’t know.
